Why do you need to install Tactile Indicators?
Apart from being required by law Tactile Indicators play a vital role in ensuring that Australians with visual impairment avoid accidents in hazardous or high traffic areas. The Building Code of Australia (BCA), Australian and New Zealand Standards (AS/NZS) and The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA), have established a compulsory Code of Practice for the addition of Tactile Indicators in all new environments that could be deemed dangerous to the vision impaired, disabled and elderly.
Where are Tactile Indicators required to be installed?
Tactile Indicators are required by law to be installed in conjunction with any approaching hazard or change of direction alongside any natural pathway, such as footpaths, passageway, ramps, stairs, walkways, landings or areas deemed similar. This is stipulated in line with the Australian and New Zealand Standard 1428.4:2002.
Where am I required to install Tactile Indicators?
Tactile Indicators are installed as required at areas that have areas deemed dangerous to the vision impaired or elderly such as sudden directional changes, along pathways of travel, such as ramps, footpaths, passageways, walkways, stairs and landings.
Are Tactile Indicators a potential trip hazard?
Because, when properly installed, Tactile Indicators sit slightly above ground level you might see them as a potential trip area but they are not. Due to their 45° beveled edge Tactile Indicators do not have the potential to cause you to trip, stumble or fall over.

Tactile Indicators are genuine all-rounders capable of being installed on just about any stable surface. These include: timber, carpet, parquetry, steel, brick, concrete, vitrified porcelain, carpet tiles ceramic tile, vitrified tile, glass, granite, travitine, screed, epoxy, limestone, sandstone, paver, slate tile, vinyl and masonry.
Can Tactile Indicators be installed outside?
In short, the answer is yes. Made from 316 marine grade stainless steel, tactile Indicators can weather any storm anywhere. Even the dirtiest weather combined with high pedestrian traffic will not cause the indicator any concern.
